Promote the unique character and environment of Punta Gorda while enhancing property values and advancing the quality of life.
City Council
The City of Punta Gorda has a City Council/City Manager form of government. The City Council is the legislative branch of City Government and operates in accordance with the provisions of the Charter of the City of Punta Gorda. The City Council is responsible for enacting ordinances and resolutions that the City Manager of Punta Gorda administers as the Administrative Officer of City Government.
Five Councilmembers are elected by the voters of Punta Gorda to serve for a two-year term. Councilmembers are elected at-large in staggered terms. Elections are held in November. The Mayor and Vice-Mayor are elected by the City Council at the first meeting held after an election.
The Mayor presides at all meetings and performs duties delegated to the Mayor by the City Council. City Council meetings are held on the first and third Wednesday of each month, at 9:00 a.m. in Council Chambers (located on the first floor of City Hall). Meetings are open to the public. In addition, the meeting is broadcast on Charlotte County TV20 on Thursday at 7 p.m. and on Sunday at 12 p.m. To add an item on a Council Agenda, please contact the City Manager's office at 575-3302. Arts & Humanities Council
(Councilmember - non-voting liaison)
Councilmember serves as contact person for City. Does not attend meetings.
Serves all art disciplines through service to cultural groups and individual artists by encouraging and facilitating greater and more efficient use of governmental and private resources for the development and support of the arts. – Represented by Councilmember Keesling
Charlotte County Airport Authority
(Councilmember or Designee)
Responsible for all aspects with regard to oversight of the Airport operations. – Represented by Vice Mayor Goldberg
Charlotte County Domestic Violence Task Force
(Councilmember or Designee)
Establish an approach that will educate the community, coordinate services and develop a response system for all victims of domestic violence. – Represented by Police Chief Arenal
CHEC
(Councilmember)
Environmental education, recreation to Charlotte County and its visitors, research environmental studies. Meet to discuss funding, budgeting, grant applications, grants received, approve any new contracts, expenditures, organization workings of CHEC. This is a not for profit organization. – Represented by Councilmember Keesling
Community Action Agency Advisory Board
(Councilmember or Designee)
To develop and recommend policies to better serve the low-income residents of Charlotte County. – Represented by Phil Wickstrom
Expressway Corridor Study
(Councilmember)
Joint task force of the various entities to review proposal for Burnt Store Road expressway between Charlotte, Lee and Collier Counties. Represented by Vice Mayor Goldberg
Juvenile Justice Committee
(Councilmember or Designee)
To identify causes of juvenile crime, develop community specific programs to prevent juvenile crime and develop commitment programs for juvenile offenders. – Represented by Police Chief Arenal
Main Street Punta Gorda
(Elected Official and City Representative)
A function of the Main Street Program to enhance the downtown area. – Represented by Vice Mayor Goldberg
Metropolitan Planning Organization
(Elected Official)
Primary agency responsible for transportation planning in Charlotte County. – Represented by Vice Mayor Goldberg and Councilmember Freeland as alternate
National Estuary Program
(Policy, Councilmember; Management, Citizen; Technical, Staff)
Federally funded EPA project. Committee is to produce a long range management plan for Charlotte Harbor and it's watershed. - Represented by Councilmember Wallace
Punta Gorda Housing Authority
(Councilmember not on board/attends meetings)
Establishes policies and goals for the housing program and to monitor the overall operation of the authority. – Represented by Mayor Albers
Southwest Florida League of Cities
(Elected or Appointed Official)
For the study of City problems through promotion of improvements of City government and efficient administration. Provides mutual assistance in the solution of City problems. Promote communications, exchange ideas & experience in successful methods of local administration. Strives to create greater civic consciousness among citizens and to encourage & work for the welfare of the Cities of Southwest Florida. – Represented by Councilmember Wallace
Southwest Florida Regional Planning Council

To protect and improve the Region's physical, economic and social environment. – Represented by Councilmember Keesling
Tourist Development Council
(per FL Statute: 2 Elected Officials or one Elected Official and one Designee)
Works to promote tourism in Charlotte County. – Represented by Mayor Albers and Councilmember Keesling
